Classical Studies
Classical Studies
Being that classical studies is not a singular subject, but rather a thread that runs through a myriad of subjects, this is simply an abbreviated overview in one place, of some of the more cyclical underpinnings of our classical studies (as opposed to the more mastery-based subjects such as Greek and Latin, grammar and rhetoric, maths and some sciences, art and music, to name a few, which are not shown here). Enrichment would likewise be an integral component, not displayed here for brevity, but includes: Saints, Icons, & Hymns; Artists, Composers, & Folk Songs; and Poets & Shakespeare, scheduled each week. Recitation is another important practice that is woven into individual subjects such as Catechesis, Poetry, Shakespeare, and at times, Tales, and History.
More can be read on our educational goal, and on why our content has a classical focus, but in summation (and because “classical" is oft-applied to anything and everything, without being defined), we view a classical education as:
An education that seeks the Truth and the Logos in our cultural inheritance that was planted in the soil of ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, & Rome; transformed by the Incarnation; and imbued and safeguarded by the Church for the cultivation and embodiment of wisdom and virtue.
“Whatever things were rightly said among all men, are the property of us Christians. For next to God, we worship and love the Word who is from the unbegotten and ineffable God, since also He became man for our sakes, that becoming a partaker of our sufferings, He might also bring us healing. For all the writers were able to see realities darkly through the sowing of the implanted word that was in them. For the seed and imitation impacted according to capacity is one thing, and quite another is the thing itself, of which there is the participation and imitation according to the grace which is from Him.”
-St. Justin Martyr, The Second Apology, Chapter 13 “How the Word has been in all men"
